If you’re an angler who is fishing for smelt, eels, trout, salmon, or freshwater fish using a rod and line, in England, Wales, or the Border Esk region, then you need to purchase a fishing licence from the Environment Agency, before you start your fishing journey.

If you cannot show a valid rod fishing licence when asked in the above areas, you can get a fine of up to £2,500.

Buying a fishing rod licence
Before you purchase your fishing licence, you need to know if you want to buy for 1-day, 8-days or 12-months.
 
Make sure you have the below things ready for when you buy it:
  • Your credit or debit card
  • Your Blue Badge or NI number
  • The details of another person (if you’re buying for them)

If you’re buying an adult licence, you can also do this at a post office, or by calling the Environment Agency.
 
How to extend a fishing licence
To change a 1-day or 8-day licence to a 12-month licence, call the Environment Agency within 14 days of buying a new licence, but you will get a refund for the first one you purchased.

Kids and children under the age of 13 don’t need a fishing licence.
